Johan Lorbeer is a German street performer. He became famous in the
past few years because of his "Still-Life" Performances,
which took place in the public area. His installations includes
"Proletarian Mural" and "Tarzan", which are famous in
Germany. Several of these performances feature Lorbeer in
an apparently impossible position.

With his still-life performances, this German artist seems to unhinge
the laws of gravity. For hours on time, he remains,
as a living work of art, in physically impossible positions.
Elevated or reduced to the state of a sculpture,
he interacts with the bewildered and irritated audience,
whose appetite for communication rises as time goes by,
often culminating in the wish to touch the artist in his
superhuman, angelic appearance in order to participate in his abilities.

Biography of the Month
Each month, the Sejong Society of will profile an influential Korean politician, business mogul, or cultural icon. Profiles will be those from Korea's past and present to help future U.S. policymakers understand key players on the Korean Peninsula.
Andre Kim (김봉남)

Born on August 24, 1935 in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, Pong-Nam (Andre) Kim started designing fashion since 1962 at the age of 27. That same year, he also opened Salon Andre in Sogong-dong in central Seoul, becoming Korea’s first male fashion designer. In 1966, he held his first fashion show in Paris, becoming the first Korean to do so. He would later hold many other fashion shows in New York, Washington DC, Barcelona, Cairo, Sydney and Beijing.
In 1981, Andre Kim was selected as Chief Designer for the 1981 Miss Universe beauty pageant. In 1982, the Italian government presented him with the Cultural Merit Award. In 1988, he designed uniforms for Korean athletes for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. In 1997, he was presented with South Korea’s Presidential Culture and Art Medal. Then in 2003 he served as UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador and was awarded Italy’s Cultural Merit Award. Also in 1997, he became the first fashion designer to receive a presidential prize. Since his fashion show at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he has been invited by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) four times. In 1999, he even played the role of a civil diplomat when the government of the city of San Francisco in the U.S. established “Andre Kim Day.”
Kim, who has lived his entire adult life alone, devoting himself solely to design, was born into the family of a farmer at the time when the idea of “fashion,” let alone overseas studies, was simply unknown in his country. Since he founded his “Salon Andre Kim” in Sogong-dong, Seoul, becoming the first male fashion designer in Korea, he has become a household name in his home country.
Age Is Nothing But A Number
Runway Models at an Andre Kim Fashion Show
What energizes and inspires this 71 year-old man to keep up with such tight schedules and persist in his craft?
Despite his age, Andre Kim is still a “designer in action,” personally staging fashion shows and taking care of his models. He plans his shows, chooses the music and selects his models in person. To him, fashion is a comprehensive art. He always strives to make his shows into comprehensive artworks because he believes that a fashion show can only be successful when music, fashion and models’ acting harmonize perfectly, as in a musical.
That is also the reason he prefers professional actors and actresses to be models for his shows, because their exquisite manners and the way they look at the audience are able to strike a chord with viewers. The design of André Kim is said to combine classical design with futuristic elements. His clothes are highly appreciated by celebrities in Korea. Andre Kim’s fame also extends beyond Korea’s borders as is evident when Michael Jackson, a big fan of André Kim, asked him to be his personal designer. However, Kim declined stating that his clothes were for everybody. Nonetheless, he continues to design many costumes for famous musicians and celebrities.
On May 5, 2007, Kim gave recognition to Korea’s most beautiful and popular stars during his 2007 Best Star Awards at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Seoul. Actress Lee Young-ae, who starred in the MBC drama “Daejanggeum” (Jewel in the Palace), received the grand prize for helping to lead the Korean wave, or “hallyu” around Asia. Since 2004, Andre Kim has handed out Best Star Awards to top stars in TV, film, and sports that have helped boost Korea’s profile around the world.

Actress Lee Young-Ae, star of the hit television drama, "Daejanggeum" (Jewel in the Palace), was the winner of the Andre Kim 2007 Best Star Award on May 5, 2007.
To Andre Kim, a fashion show is hard work. That is why he attends all kinds of operas, musicals and performances, not to borrow ideas on apparel design, but to see how other shows are staged, including music, stage setting and production. He gets up at 5:30 in the morning, reads 17 newspapers, and watches television programs on five televisions in his apartment. That way he stays up-to-date on which celebrities are popular these days and who has the potential to grow.
He comes to his office at 9 a.m. to work with this staff, design new clothes and meet with guests. He neither drinks nor smokes. He even stays away from coffee and doesn’t play golf. He says he has never played poker or the Korean game “go-stop” and never sung karaoke. It has been less than 10 years since he started to have lunch regularly. He was so busy for 30 years after his debut he didn’t even have time to eat proper lunches, and had to buy packed meals or order out. Oftentimes, he had lunch no earlier than at 4 p.m., as he was completely engrossed in his work.
Misunderstanding and Prejudice

Kim’s public image is sometimes regarded as strange and causes misunderstanding. He pencils in his eyebrows, uses heavy makeup, wears the same attire 365 days a year, lives alone, and uses many English words in his speech. Not long ago, his real name, Kim Bong-nam, became the subject of malicious jokes after he disclosed it to the public when he was interrogated in connection with an apparel lobbying scandal that took place in 1989. At the time, Kim said he was so hurt he wanted to leave the country forever.
But he decided to seize that opportunity to shed his previous image of a designer who makes clothes only for celebrities and the affluent, and spread his image as a down-to-earth, man-next-door person. His heavy makeup, the same white attire he wears 365 days a year and his penchant for using English words have become his unique trademark.
“I want to be remembered as a proud Korean one hundred, or five hundred, or even one thousand years from now. I want to remain in history for promoting fashion into an art form and impressing the entire world instead of just imitating foreign designs.”
When the late Peter Drucker, a prolific writer on American business and economics until age 95, was asked which of his books he liked the most. Drucker replied, “my next book.” Andre Kim is 71 years old now, but he is still as passionate about his craft as ever. And when he is asked which of his fashion shows he liked the most, he will probably reply much as Peter Drucker did.
